How essential is hybrid or remote work in your business

The Hybrid/Remote Work Debate

It might go a little against popular opinion, but I believe companies aren’t obligated to provide hybrid or work from home (WFH) options. As a recruiter in the Property Industry, here’s my take:

🔹 Companies have the right to decide how they structure their working environments and what they offer.
🔹 At the same time, employees can choose if those conditions are right for them.

Companies compete for talent in an open market. If offering remote working is as critical as some claim, we’d expect businesses with flexible policies to attract the best candidates and outperform those that are strictly office-based. But, we’re not seeing this happen across the board.

From a recruitment perspective, yes, offering remote positions can widen the candidate pool. However, it’s just one factor in a company’s overall Employer Value Proposition.

The employers perspective suggests that it is not always the best option for the property company who, in trying to bow down to pressure to offer WFH, encounter further business struggles and are left short staffed in the office which can put demands on the staff remaining.

There are plenty of successful companies that recruit top talent for full-time office roles, and they have other strengths working in their favour, like:

🔹 A strong mission
🔹 Positive workplace culture
🔹 Competitive pay
🔹 Clear career advancement opportunities
🔹Working towards Qualifications that are company funded
🔹 Great learning and development programs

Of course, if a company lacks these attributes, then offering remote work as an incentive can make sense. But it’s important to remember that remote work isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s just one consideration in building a strong employer brand.
In fact, it’s often easier to fill an on-site role at a company with a great reputation than to hire remotely for a business that doesn’t offer much else.
